A small experiment was done on 19 patients where a single dose of the psychedelic ingredient psilocybin was given to them and it was found that more than half of them experienced depressed and minor changes in their brain activities which lasted for about five weeks.
A team from Imperial College London informed that it is not a good habit to self-medicate without any doctor’s advice.
According to a series of studies it has been concluded that psilocybin can be used as a lubricant for the mind which will be effectively work on depression. People going through depression can consume a dose of psilocybin thus it will allow them to overcome the depressive symptoms for limited period of time.
To experiment the study in detail, the team performed MRI brain scan twice. Once before using psilocybin treatment and then after one day of usage (when the patients were found in good condition).
As per the report, it was found that psilocybin works on two key areas of the brain which are the amygdala and the mode network.
In case of the amygdala, the process which deals with expressing emotions such as fear and anxiety became less active with excessive use of psilocybin. In case of mode network, it stabilized the network region. Therefore, it provided a mental satisfaction to the people suffering from depression.
Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, head of psychedelic research at Imperial, confirmed that with the help of psilocybin depressed brains can be calmed up. He also added that some of the patients confirmed after using it that they were reset, reborn, rebooted into life.
There is still a long way to go. The scientists are working on psilocybin but it is still a question whether the drug can be accepted globally for the treatment for depression or not.
